Short Story - Question & Clarify

Short Story - Question & Clarify

Neglect

Questions (wonderings)

Clarify (meanings)

The windscreen wipers worked furiously to clear the glass from the driving rain. It was no use, he still couldn’t see, so he pulled into a side street and waited for the pelting sheet to ease.

Flicking through the radio, a wavering squeal emerged, quickly changing into a fast beated pop song.  Jonesie, as he was called on the rank, shuffled lower into his seat and settled down to waited. Looking up to change the crackling station, he noticed a brown-coated figure huddling in the meagre shelter of a deserted warehouse. Jonesie studied the figure and decided, being a kind-hearted man, that he would try and do something to help.

As Jonesie neared, the brown-coated figure started to shift uneasily, looking up with fearful brown eyes.

“You look pretty cold out here, would you like to come and sit in my taxi till the rain eases off a bit?”, Jonesie asked sincerely.

After waiting a bit and receiving no reply, Jonesie headed back for the warmth of the taxi. When he neared the car, he noticed someone behind him and turning around saw that the brown-coated figure had followed him to the car.

“So you decided to come then, eh mate?”, Jonesie queried heavily, as he helped the figure into the passenger seat.  Closing the door, Jonesie thought about what might happen to this poor guy.

In the car, Jonesie changed the station yet again finding a country song he thoroughly enjoyed. After the song had finished, he flicked the radio off and turned to his bedraggled guest, noticing that his bones almost protruded through the coat.

“So, aye, where do you come from then mate?”, inquired Jonesie. “That’s if you don’t mind me asking?”

His only reply was the turning of the brown-coated figures head, to stare wonderingly out into the menacing dark sky.

Jonesie tried again, “Eh, um, what’s ya name then?”

The brown-coated figure turned his head in the direction of Jonesie and blinked his fearful brown eyes in reply.

Silence followed, Jonesie thinking of what he could do for his silent guest.

Jonesie flicked on the radio again, it crackled and hissed, and then resumed into some teenage trash.

“Come on mate, you must be starving. Lets take ya home and give ya some tucker”, Jonesie said.

The brown-coated figure did not move and his answer was only a deep sigh.

The rain had eased and as they drove, the road glistened like oil. Jonesie had finished his shift, so there were no problems. When they got inside his house, Jonesie helped the figure to dry himself, but he never took his coat off.  Jonesie thought this a bit odd but made no further inquiries.  He prepared a meal and the brown- coated figure warmed himself in front of the blazing fire.

Six months later, the brown-coated figure and Jonesie spend every night in the taxi, listening to the crackling radio and sharing long conversations with many pauses and deep sighs of reply.

The fearful brown eyes are fearful no more and the ragged, tatty coat has been replaced by a thick, warm one.

Jonesie and the brown-coated figure spend all their time together, after all, dogs are a man's best friend.

Manananggal

Manananggal

Manananggal (Filipino Folklore Creature) by RenzZero on DeviantArt

Firstly, the Manananggal is a half-bodied, vampire-like creature. It is a myth that has been made by the Philippines. Secondly, The Manananggal mainly preys on pregnant women, inculding men. Lastly, The Manananggal's weakness is sunlight.

The Manananggal is a vicious, vampire-like mythical creature that originated in the Philippines. It is man-eating and blood-sucking.

The Manananggal looks like a disgusting, hideous woman. It has the ability to sever its upper torso from its lower torso and sprout huge wings that resemble bat wings, which it uses to fly through the sky and search for its next victim.

When its upper torso lifts from the ground with the connected wings, its intestines trail behind.

The Manananggal primarily preys on pregnant women in the middle of the night when they are asleep. It uses its elongated tongue to suck out the woman’s blood or the heart of her fetus.

When the Manananggal choose to prey on men, it can appear as a beautiful woman. It will lure the men to a private place and eat them alive, feasting on their stomaches, hearts, and livers.

The Manananggal can only be killed when sunlight hits its separated torso.

The best way to destroy the Manananggal is to wait until the upper torso separates from the lower torso, because the lower torso will remain motionless and vulnerable. Sprinkle either salt or crushed garlic onto the lower half, because those items are fatal. After that, the sections will be unable to rejoin and the Manananggal as a whole will perish once the sun rises.

In addition to being vulnerable to salt and garlic, the Manananggal also avoid daggers, light, vinegar, and the tails of stingrays

Some people believe a black chick lives inside of the Manananggal. The chick eats the innards of its host while keeping them alive.

Others believe you can turn yourself into a Manananggal by chanting a special incantation, anointing yourself with oil, and procuring an egg that contains a black chick.

The Manananggal are commonly accompanied by a Tiktik bird. Its calls are meant to assist the Manananggal and confuse victims.

The Manananggal will fly to the house of a victim, land on the roof, and enter.

To keep the Manananggal away from your home, you can leave pots of uncooked rice, ash, or salt around the vicinity. If they spot any of those items from the roof, they may decide not to enter.

The Manananggal have wide eyes and wild hair. Its teeth have the ability to sprout into fangs and its fingers can change into long, sharp claws. Although the myth of the Manananggal is most popular in the Philippines, similar folklore creatures can be found in Indonesia and Malaysia.

The word Manananggal comes from the word tanngel which translates to ‘remover’ or ‘separator.’

The concept of the Manananggal appears in several films around the world, such as Manananggal, which is the first Filipino horror movie ever made.

In Mother Tongue:

Odysseus and the Cyclops

Odysseus and the Cyclops

ArtStation - Odysseus and the Cyclops , Eugenio Emanuel Rodriguez

At night, at a calm sea, Odysseus's 12 ships were sailing to Ithaca. Then suddenly, they stumbled across an Island on a sandy beach.

After they hauled their ships up to safety, they soon realized that they're on the land of Cyclops. Odysseus and his other men went to get some supplies.

They then soon found a cave. Inside, it looks like is was built out of corral out of boulders by massive hands (well that doesn't made any sense now does it?). There they also saw pens crowded with goats, and shaggy fleeced sheep, baskets loaded with cheese and pails filled with milk.

Odysseus's men were about to take the animals, but Odysseus wanted to see what kind of being lives in the cave that they're in, imagining what gifts would a being would give them. (BRUH- YOU'RE IN THE LAND OF CYCLOPS). So they all sat down, nibbling some cheese until the sun went down.

But then, there comes a Cyclops, tossing a load of poles and tree trunks on the ground and went back out for his flock, while the men hid further back away from the firelight.

The Cyclops then drove his goats and sheep into the cave, blocking the entrance with a giant rock. He milked his animals whilst tossing some tree trunks on the fire. Odysseus saw what kind of being stood in front of him. The Cyclops has a one great round eye, fiercely staring.

The Cyclops seemed to notice the men and demanded who they were and what they wanted.
